Most successful English football managers

Big Sam is now the new England manager, the 17th – including caretakers – since Walter Winterbottom, so we take a look at the most successful English football managers in recent English club football history.

Sam Allardyce is yet to win one of the major honours English clubs challenge for, but is not alone.

Sam Allardyce

Since 1980 English managers have won the three major titles in this country – Premier League (First Divison), FA Cup and League Cup – a total of 34 times out of a possible 81. Scottish managers, meanwhile, have won 38 of those same titles during that period.

Added to that, though, English coaches have also scooped major European competitions with English clubs – Champions League or European Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Cup or Europa League – eight times.

English managers have also enjoyed limited success abroad, Terry Venables, Bobby Robson and Steve McClaren all picking up honours in Spain, Portugal or Holland. They are among the most successful English football managers list.

There was some success for English manager on British soil last season, though, as Alan Stubbs guided Hibernian to Scottish Cup victory while Mark Warburton led Rangers to the Scottish League Cup.

Howard Wilkinson is on our list of the most successful English football managersYou have to go back to 2008 for the last time and English club lifted a top flight title or cup with an English boss at the helm, while there has only been one other since the turn of the millennium.

The last English manager to win the English top flight was in 1992.

And of the 23 managers to win one of the top prizes with English clubs since 1980, only four of them have been England manager.

Here’s our rundown of the English managers to enjoy ‘major’ success with English clubs, but who is the top of our list of the most successful English football managers.
