“I needed it to make up for the penalty. But credit to their keeper it was a good save,” Gerrard told lagalaxy.com after the game.
“The performance was good. The last two performances I was really pleased with, and it was nice to get the goal at the end to make up for the penalty miss. But the team was sensational today, and there’s a lot of positives to take from this one.”
After Real goalkeeper Nick Rimand saved Gerrard’s poor spot kick in the sixth minute, Juan Manuel Martinez headed Real ahead in the 16th minute.
The Galaxy hit back through Gyasi Zardes three minutes later, before Mike Magee, Emmanuel Boateng and former Tottenham Hotspur forward Giovani dos Santos gave them a 4-1 lead by half time.
Javier Morales pulled on back from the spot after the break but Gerrard bagged his first of the season for LA Galaxy, who also featured Gerrard’s fellow England centurion Ashley Cole, who joined the club from Roma in January.
The victory extended Galaxy’s unbeaten streak to five games sent them leapfrogging Salt Lake into third spot in the MLS Western Conference, three points off top-placed FC Dallas who have played two more games.
