On This Day in History: Rene Higuita’s amazing and bizarre Scorpion Kick against England at Wembley

Time flies, and so do you if your name is Rene Higuita.

It was exactly 20 years ago today when the mad-cap Colombia goalkeeper performed a jaw-dropping moment of football that will go down in history and be remembered for ever.

It’s not a technique coaches will work on with kids, and no doubt the Colombian boss that night against England at Wembley was scratching his head wondering what on earth was going on.

But he needn’t have worried.

Jamie Redknapp’s tame looping ball goalwards was a routine save for Higuita, but he is not a routine keeper. As the effort was about the fly over his head, Higuita leapt forward, flung his legs in the air and flamboyantly back-heeled the ball away to safety.

Not content with that, the South American tried it a few times after that, too, but it was the moment at Wembley he, and everyone else, will never forget.
