Champions League holders Liverpool begin the defence of their sixth European Cup title on Tuesday when they travel to Napoli, and Jurgen Klopp’s side prepared for their trip with an open training session at their Melwood base.
Liverpool beat Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in June’s final, and in their opening game of the new group stage campaign they face a side who they lost to on the road to Madrid last season.
Lorenzo Insigne’s 90th minute strike handed the Italy outfit a 1-0 win at the San Paolo stadium, inflicting the first of three away defeats for Liverpool in the group phase.
Back at Anfield in the return game, Liverpool needed to win to progress to the knockouts, and Mo Salah’s first half strike gave them the vital lead. A magnificent point-blank save from Brazilian keeper Alisson in stoppage time denied Napoli the goal that would have sent them through instead and paved the way for Liverpool’s ultimate success.
Alisson was not in training on Monday afternoon due to the injury sustained in their Premier League opener with Norwich, while Andy Robertson also missed the open training session but is in Liverpool’s travelling party heading to Naples. Divock Origi and Naby Keita were also absent.
